Description:

Small saprophytic fungus 1-2 cm in diameter.

Cup shaped ascomycota, order pezizales. Saucer-shaped and sessile, inner surface vermillion orange, outer paler, covered in minute, downy brown hairs especially near the margin. Habitat on bare sandy or gravelly soil. Season autumn to spring. Uncommon. Not edible.

This European species appears all year as smooth, dull orange-red disks up to 15 mm in diameter on damp sandy soil.

Habitat:

Spotted in a Holm oak and cork oak forest. Parque Nacional de Monfragüe.

I thought it was the common eyelash cup, Scutellinia scutellata. But the dark hairs or "eyelashes" at the edge of the cup were too short. After a few hours searching I found that they are probably the more rare orange cups, Melastiza sp. probably M. chateri
