Field Notes

Description:

Fairly large orange mushroom with hints of yellow and red. Gilled with a stem. Firm texture.

Habitat:

Devil's Hole State Park, Niagara Falls, New York. Forest. Growing from the side of a rotting, cut log

Notes:

Any help for an ID welcome!

I should imagine they still have the potential to grow solitarily, but I don't really know the species well enough. Perhaps it's a different Gymnopilus?
My only question being, this mushroom was growing solo and the information here says it grows in dense clusters. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/gymnopilus_junonius.html
