Thanks Brian. I think that Gaia answer your question about their doings. Picture was taken during day time, about 13h, but it's a bit shady region near forest stream. It was quite hot that day, about 35-37 °C. You can read more info about species on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptidea_sinapis Not sure, about name origin!! Greetings.

I think they're collecting water, minerals or/and nutrients from the sediments on the river rocks, I've seen this behavior several times along rivers. They also cluster on dead animals and fresh feces for the same reason, at least that's my hypothesis. Hope that answers some of your questions :)

Ok Mauron This is awesome! Please give us some info on this! What are the butterflies doing and why? Why are they called Wood White? The picture looks like it was taken at night? Mauron -- I've got a hundred more questions after these !! Has the weather there been exceptionally hot during the day?
