Field Notes
Description:
Small shore bird.
Adults have black legs and a short stout straight dark bill. The body is dark gray-brown on top and white underneath. The head and neck are light gray-brown.
Habitat:
Summer: breed in Arctic and sub-Arctic environment, from Alaska to Siberia.
Winter: long distances migrants. They use coastal estuarine habitats, almost worldwide, mostly Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America.
Notes:
This vagrant one was spotted on the Atlantic shore of Africa. Quite unusual.
The worldwide population tends to decrease rapidly (5% per year). IUCN classified the species as Near Threatened.
