Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized heron (when fully standing, but not lucky enough for that on film yet). Dark brown and light brown to cream striped and flecked body, head, wings. Chest is lighter and beneath the beak is more striped than anywhere else. Beak is really long and strong. Has a habit of camouflaging itself by flattening his body down on the ground and pointing his beak into the air, makes him look like a stick, if you didn't see him first you would never notice him.

Habitat:

Seen in marshy paddocks of a rural dairy farm.

Notes:

These are terrible photos, but this guy is so shy you would not believe, if he sees me first, he is away. ... or he melts down into the rushes so far and sticks his beak up so he looks like a stick, and further photos are really no point, because you can't tell he is a bird at all. This is the best I have for now... but still trying.
