Field Notes

Description:

Mainly bright red dragonfly in overall appearance, about 4 cm long. The abdomen bright red and slightly enlarged toward the end. Abdomen uniformly coloured, red-brown. Legs black. In pics 3 and 4, I believe an immature male, with that yellowish ventral side.

Habitat:

seen in a small valley which we baptized a "Valley of butterflies" - the grassland valley is really very small, not more than 100 at its longest side and completely surrounded by a broad-leaved forest, and edged by a small and very clean stream. When we visited, grasslands were in flower and covered in a multitude of butterflies, mainly fritillaries. We also found a multitude of bees, bumble-bees, syrphes etc.
