Field Notes

Description:

Pekins are also called "Bantam Cochins". They are true bantams, in that they aren;'t just scaled down versions of a larger breed. They have profuse feathering around the feet. (I can hardly see the feet of my little hen!) This handsome fellow may be just over 12" tall.
They are excellent for backyard pets, as long as they have a predator-proof coop and run, as they are small and don't fly very well. Hand reared from chicks, they are very gentle, quiet (except when the roo's crow) and incredibly soft.

Habitat:

Breed originated in China. My 4 live in my backyard. :)

Notes:

FYI... don't let the small size fool you... my two boys just took on a Red-shouldered Hawk this afternoon. And won easily. Hawk ended up "donating" a few feathers before getting away. No hawk was going to mess with their ladies!!!
