Field Notes

Description:

The White-quilled Rock-pigeon has a beautiful rich, dark, chocolate brown plumage that looks like scales on reptiles - the white "quill" being the white base of outer primaries. It also has a distinct white line under the eye, downturned at ear coverts.

Habitat:

Found amongst the rocks and boulders on the walk to Galvan's Gorge. It is walking away from a very small pool of water it had stopped to drink at.

Notes:

There are two subspecies of this type of pigeon and they live in quite a restricted range, the range of the other ssp boothi extends into the Northern Territory - Michael Morcombe. Though it inhabits a small range, it is not considered vulnerable under the IUCN Redlist.
