Hmm..."horrid" or "vulgar", huh? Haha...sounds about on par with "exceedingly prickly". :) Great job on the final ID and interesting link!
I'm hoping this is right...as both C.horridulum and C. vulgare are called "Bull Thistle". C. vulgare is an awful invasive, and C. horridulum is a lovely native that many butterflies love to nectar from. And not as common. How about "exceedingly prickly weed"? lol.!!! (couldn't resist. sorry.) I think this is some kind of a thistle. There are both native and non-native thistles. I'll see what I can find. That reddish mid-rib should be a good ID aid....
