Description:
I had never seen a woodpecker feeding on bananas before so found it fascinating to watch this beautiful woodpecker using its beak to pierce its way into these small Tobagan ones, apparently it is very common for quite alot of birds in Tobago according to the naturalist that owned the residence where this one was seen.
Adults are 20.5 cm long and weigh 48g. They have a zebra-barred black and white back and wings and a white rump. The tail is black with some white barring, and the underparts are pale buff-brown.
Habitat:
This one was seen enjoying the bananas at a private house in Tobago which is opened up for the public to get close up views of the beautiful birdlife in the area. It usually occurs in forest and semi open woodland.
Notes:
In the second photo there is also a blue grey tanager sharing the bananas. the bananas are not grown for consumption but left solely for all the birds to enjoy.
