Southern Grey Shrike
Lanius meridionalis
25.0394, 51.3145
Field Notes
Description:
The Southern Grey bears significant resemblance to the Great Grey Shrike, to which it is also closely related. Shrikes are carnivorous and eat small rodents and lizards as well as insects. They have a characteristic feeding habit which includes impaling their prey on thorns or even barbwire. This one was guarding its territory, and in the second picture you can see two of many small mice that we believe had been captured and impaled by this bird.
