Field Notes

Description:

Wings are brown and lack eyespots. Underside of hindwing has a silvery patch at the outer margin which contains 4 black reflective spots. Wing span is 1 3/8 - 1 11/16 inches (3.5 - 4.3 cm).

Habitat:

Southeastern United States south to central peninsular Florida; west to southeast Kansas, central Oklahoma, central Texas, and northeastern Mexico. Near open, wet woodland; grassy areas near water; near streams and ponds. This one was photographed at the Savannah River near Jackson, SC.

Notes:

Caterpillar host is probably Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon).
