Field Notes

Description:

The Lesser Black-backed Gull has a dark gray to black mantle, the rest of the body being white. The legs are yellow to orange-yellow. The beak is yellow and thin, with a red spot on the lower mandible. He does not present any white mirror at the wingtips. In winter, adults head streaked with gray.
First year juveniles appear very dark in flight, dark under the wings, and white rump. They get adult plumage in the third year.

Habitat:

The Lesser Black-backed Gull breeds on coastal cliffs, buildings, and dunes . He spent the winter on the coasts, estuaries, inland lakes, reservoirs and landfills.

Notes:

A large flock of adults and 1st winter juv./adults wintering on the shore of the Atlantic ocean, close to the Banc d'Arguin national park.
