Sea Fig
Carpobrotus chilensis
38.313, -123.031
Field Notes
Description:
At first, I thought these were just a purple morph of Carpobrotus edulis, which is shown in my last spotting. However, upon looking at the leaves I noticed it looked a bit different. The leaves and flowers are a bit smaller that C. edulis. The leaves also seemed to spread out more wide, whereas the C. edulis leaves seemed to go more upward. I'm not positive, but I think the last two photos shows a hybridized plant between the two species. The two species are known to hybridize readily.
Habitat:
On the cliffs at Schoolhouse Beach overlooking Bodega Bay.
Notes:
Invasive species
