Habitat:

Halfway up Mt. Katahdin. This part of the trail had some low-growing blueberries, evergreens, and other small shrubs

Yes, one of the mountain laurels. Either the Sheep Laurel (Kalmia angustifolia) or the Bog/Swamp Laurel (K. polifolia) - both of which have pinker flowers than the Mountain Laurel
