Field Notes

Description:

Yellow Mantid with pink eyes and a blue mouth. Her tegmina have pink spots on them. The wings are checkered yellow. This species is differentiated from other in the genus by the wings. Also the "facial plate (below and between antennae) about twice as wide as long (as for genus), eyes not as protruding as in Carolina Mantid.

Habitat:

Entryway on a green plant. It fell off and got quite upset, displaying her wings so I moved her to the Milkweed to take photos.

Thank you friends for the honor! This girl deserves an award for her beautiful and fierce display. I hope she's not always as clumsy because she will be a very angry Mantis. :)

Hi ForestDrangon, thank you for the reminder about the mission! Mantids are truly marvelous! Added :)
Great series! This would be a lovely addition to the Marvelous Mantids of the World mission. http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/15738247
I enjoy spotting them! Nice job caring for yours, Hema. Thank you for your comment, Sukanya!
It looks like a ballerina in the last shot. Thank you for sharing.
This mantis has lovely colors. Mine had a lot of red in them. i guess it is the substrate which imparts the color. It was a hot day and I held a spoon full of water in front of the male. i was overjoyed when it took two sips.i never saw it again though.
Thank you for your comments, Hema. I've never read that. The blue coloring is supposed to be more pronounced in females but of course there's variation in coloring of most species. Since the abdomen is quite large, that tells me that this is a female. Males have much narrower abdomen.
http://bugguide.net/node/view/1141736 One of the comments says that the blue upper lip indicates a male. Your series is superb!! i found a limbata family in my backyard. Female was large and pinkish.
