Field Notes

Description:

Flat crab, differing in sizes about 6-8cm body, but legs that long again. Flat round bodies, flat segmented legs, eyes pop up but only just above the face, not high. .Bodies a sort of navy blue with red and white fleck, appearing sort of striped at first sighting, but actually sort of dotted flecky patterns of contrasting light shades. These crabs did not hang out in the rock pools but stayed as close to the sea water as possible, where the sea had completely receded they stayed down crevices in the shade most of the time, and always retreating when approached, either into the sea or into the darkness. Had quite a robotic but fast sideways movement.

Habitat:

Seen around coral rock pools at low tide

Notes:

I think this is a sally light foot (Grapsus) but I am confused by the many different descriptions of the same genus.
