Field Notes

Description:

Perennial. Plants float on water.
Flowers. Ca. 1 inch diameter; arise from leaf axil; yellow; five obvate petals with pale pinnate nerves; five sepals; 10 yellow stamen; cylindrical pistel with single style (characteristic of Ludwigia sp.)
Leaves ca. 3 inches long; elliptical with smooth margins; glossy; arranged alternately.
Stems are green with red-brown areas.

Habitat:

Growing in shallow water on south shore of inlet below the Old Fort.

Notes:

Several years ago, this patch was dense and flowered profusely. Very few flowers this year – I saw only one flower.
This plant is considered a noxious weed in some areas.
