Field Notes

Description:

Cap: Largest, ca.7 cm diameter; broadly convex, or nearly flat; dry; mottled with shades pinkish purple; bald.
Gills: Attached to the stem; close or crowded; gray-brown to purplish-brown.
Stem: 2-4 cm long; ca 0.75 cm thick; dry; silky near the apex and rough below; whitish near the apex, brownish near the base.

Habitat:

Mushrooms growing directly on a fallen hardwood log in moist, southeast-facing gully slope under predominantly hardwood forest (with a few pines) about 5 m from a lake.
