Field Notes

Description:

Strikingly handsome bird. Black, white and orange colours give it a distinctive appearance.Very vocal with large repertoire of sounds. This one has a streaky, but largely white, crown.

Habitat:

Fruiting tree in car park near Grand Palace in Bangkok. Urban habitat. Lots of cars and plenty of hawkers and tourists; the bird ignored all that.It was bust feeding...please any ID on the tree?

Notes:

I see this species regularly in Kolkata, India. However, mine have a black crown. The one I have seen in Thailand has a more whitish crown (first photo); it may be a different subspecies.Wikipedia says that the subspecies vary slightly in plumage, extent of streaking of the feathers and in measurements. According to the figure shown I think this is Gracupica contra jalla

Lovely spotting, Sukanya. It is a handsome bird. I didn't know there was a pied species of myna - we have the common myna in Australia.
