Chinese Mantis
Tenodera aridifolia
37.2264, -95.7111
Field Notes
Description:
A large, I assume female, Chinese mantis. This species is not native to Kansas, surprise there, and is actually native through most of Asia and was introduced in North America in 1890s. Despite this, it's pretty beneficial, and this one was hanging around my porchlight, eating moths. Smart predator.
Habitat:
These guys are native to most of Asia, but have been introduced here in the US sometime in the 1890s.
Notes:
Mantids are constantly hungry and while they're fun to observe they make terrible pets, so don't keep them captive. You'll starve it to death.
