Field Notes

Description:

I was fortunate to find this mantis while it was still eating a butterfly. They blend into vegetation so well and ambush prey. On this lantana plant next to the flowers was a perfect spot for it to be. They are variable in color green to brown and about 3 inches long.

Habitat:

Spotted on a flowering lantana plant at the Falco Lake State Park butterfly garden.

Notes:

Males often fly to lights. Females are flightless.
