Field Notes

Description:

Brown grasshopper; approximately 1.5 inches long; upper hind legs don’t have bands on outer faces (as do many Melanoplus sp.) but have 2 dark spots on top. Tibae are reddish. Wings shorter than the pronatum; the oval forewings almost overlap on top. Dark stripe behind the eye.

Habitat:

Perched on mushroom (Russula sp.) in an open mixed hardwood/pine forest, on east-facing slope above a lake.
Found in late summer into early winter.
