Field Notes

Description:

An African spurred tortoise here at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo. These big guys are actually the third largest tortoise, being beat out only by the Galapagos and Aldabra. They're also listed as Vulnerable. So save the tortoises. The two we have here at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo are here (like all our animals) as rehabilitation animals.

Habitat:

These tortoises inhabit the southern edge of the Sahara desert, in northern Africa.

They are incredible reptiles, the one in the picture's name is Dave, and I agree they're very gentle animals. I love working in their enclosure.
I have two females as pets, they are very intelligent and lively. Move faster than I expected and appear to recognize family members!
