Field Notes

Description:

Black wasp about 1 inch long with club-shaped petiole connecting abdomen and thorax. Amber-colored wings, antennae and ventral side of abdomen.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted on concrete slab outside my back door, apparently in distress. It did not fly away when I approached, but walked slowly. However, after I took my camera inside and returned to look for it, it was gone, so it obviously had more mobility than it seemed when I first observed it.

A couple of days after I made this spotting I discovered the dead insect a few yards away. I collected the corpse and recorded additional images (nos. 3-5).
