Field Notes

Description:

A female cougar here at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo. I've never actually been able to get a good shot of her, since while I could get a shot of her through her cage it wouldn't do her beauty justice. So I got into the viewing platform for this one and she got CLOSE. She's a very curious animal. I start volunteer work at the Zoo here soon, so here's hoping I get good shots of all our animals.

Habitat:

Cougars are pretty spread out through North America. At least the Western US and Canada. I'm not sure they're native to Kansas, although I have seen them here. This particular cougar is a captive animal, but the Ralph Mitchell Zoo gets all our animals from rehab centers, and we take good care of them.

Notes:

I'd just like to add here that cougars are very dangerous ambush predators, and while attacks on humans are rare, be cautious if you encounter one in the wild. Remember, if you're in a spot to encounter one, you're in their turf.
