Field Notes

Description:

A medium-sized black-and-white woodpecker with limited white on back and heavy barring on flanks.

Habitat:

Coniferous forests across western Canada, Alaska and the midwestern United States.

Notes:

I have found this bird hard to photograph because I normally see it in dense forests where it is difficult to find good light. This one briefly came into the open.
