Field Notes

Description:

Arbutus menziesii is an evergreen tree. It has orangish-red bark. The bark peels away to show the newer green bark underneath. The leaves have a glossy dark green top and a pale green bottom. The edges are smooth. Leaf texture is sort of thick and waxy and smooth.

Habitat:

The madrone are native to the west coast of North America from Vancouver Island in British Columbia down to California. These trees like dry, well drained soil.

Notes:

Out in Nature these trees grow to be 30 to 80 ft tall. This specific specimen is from our front yard and is only a few years old. Currently it is 7 ft tall.
