Field Notes

Description:

For identification, it is useful to pay attention to white under the male's wings; Red little crest almost never visible. The male is black with a narrow bright red band at the top of the head; the female is all brown (photo #4). It measures about 18 centimeters. It feeds on fruits, seeds, flowers and insects harvested from the mean height to the top of the trees. Frequents feeders with fruit.

Habitat:

Ruby-crowned Tanager can be seen isolated, in pairs, groups of 3 or 4 individuals or even in larger packs. The male, when excited, displays the red stain of the head (pileus) and moves the wings showing the white of the lower wing coverts. Kind of forest habits, Ruby-crowned Tanager is seen more often when visiting fruit trees on the edges or around forests and coppices. Lives in pairs. It is a bustling bird that frequents the foliage of shrubs and trees, actively moving in search of food.
