Field Notes

Description:

A native vine related to catalpas. The large reddish trumpet-shaped flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds. The leaves are pinnately compound; each leaflet has pinnate venation and is toothed. The fruit is a pod as shown in the photo.

Habitat:

Open woods, roadsides, telephone poles.

Notes:

Both native and cultivated varieties of this plant are grown in gardens.
This is one of my first spottings, taken with a 1.5 megapixel camera.
