Flowering dogwood
Cornus florida
37.4043, -77.7009
Field Notes
Description:
The flowering dogwood is the Virginia state tree and state flower. Each "flower" is actually an inflorescence of several small, four-petaled yellowish flowers surrounded by four off-white bracts. The small flowers, apparently, are a tasty treat for inchworms (picture 2).
Habitat:
Dogwoods are a common understory tree in the oak-hickory forests of central Virginia.
