Leaf case Moth larva
Hyalarcta huebneri
-37.8971, 145.312
Field Notes
Description:
This larva, with a mottled head and thoracic segments was encased in a silken bag (about 18 mm long) covered with small pieces of bark, leaves and sticks.
Pic 1 shows thoracic legs.
Habitat:
Seen crawling along a garden wall.
Notes:
The larva had its head out as it was creeping up the wall and when I touched it with a dry leaf it waved its head about, extending more of its body out of the case. When it had had enough of my (gentle) prodding, it pulled its body into the case, ending up looking like Pic 4.
It is said to feed on a variety of plant species.
