Field Notes

Description:

This handsome Oceanic Manta Ray - Manta birostris is a first observation to Manta Trust's database.

I was asked to give a name to him - Prince Adora, in appreciation to the crews of the the Boat; MV Adora that I dive with on many trips to Maldives.

Notes:

Similar to most large sized Marine Life, this Oceanic Manta Rays have other fishes like Remora and other fishes stuck/following it.

Species ID Suggestions

@Neil - the markings on the belly are used to identify different individuals and in this particular case, this is a first documentation of this individual in the database of Manta Base, hence they allowed me to give it a name :D
Thanks, @Mark, @SukanyaDatta, @triggsturner and @Neil for your kind words and appreciation :)
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated Albert!
Excellent marine spotting as always, Albert. Interesting marks on the tummy. Are they used to ID individual animals?
