Field Notes

Description:

Most likely first instar of a Leaf Insect (nymph) of the Family Phylliidae, under the genus Chitoniscus. This could possibly be the species, Chitoniscus feejeeanus. There are around 6 species known under the genus, Chitoniscus and 3 of them are described from Fiji.
Very small, less than 1 cm with dark fringes. When first spotted, it was on an old leaf where part of the leaf was already old/faded, making it well camouflaged on the leaf (Pic#1)

Habitat:

Rainforest, found in the garden area of the Resort I was staying at.

Notes:

New Organism to Project Noah
If not mistaken, very little is known about them as the 3 species from Fiji were described in 1853, 1864 and 1906.
The species Chitoniscus was featured in the postal stamp of Fiji and that's the only picture reference I could find of them aside from the specimens pictures.
