Field Notes

Description:

black fur around the eyes, which contrasts sharply with the surrounding white face coloring. This is reminiscent of a "bandit's mask" and has thus enhanced the animal's reputation for mischief.

Habitat:

Their range extends from Southern Canada to Central America, with the exception of desert areas and parts of Utah, Nevada and the Rocky Mountains. Raccoons are related to ringtails, coatis and kinkajous.
