Elks usually have a lighter brown shade of fur on their bodies and a darker shade on their neck up, they are pretty much all brown. They come in many variations of body size and weight, it usually depends on what gender they are, Cow (female) : 500 pounds (225 kg) 4 1/2 feet (1.3 m) at the shoulder, 6 1/2 feet (2 m) from nose to tail, Bull (male) : 700 pounds (315 kg), 5 feet (1.5 m) at the shoulder, 8 feet (2.4 m) from nose to tail. Elks have a symbiotic (mutualism) relationship with magpies. Magpies gently pull of the ticks on an elk's fur and in return elks protect them from predators. They have thick fur to keep them warm in the winter, hooves so they can trudge through the snow and antlers so they can protect themselves from danger. Sexual reproduction for elks usually involve a dozen or more attempts, by autumn the second year the female elk will be able to produce one, and very rarely, two offsprings. They are usually found in the same area as caribous.
