Field Notes

Description:

The head is green with a black spot before the eyes; the thorax is green; the first segment of the abdomen is green and the rest blue.

Habitat:

Found in lakes and ponds, also in slow streams. Due to its migratory nature, it can be observed anywhere, both in sites with bodies of water and in sites without surface water.
This specimen was flying around a small pond in a garden in the city of Valencia.

Notes:

The migration of dragonflies includes more than one generation, that is, they are trips whose duration exceeds the life of these animals. Specifically, the Anax junius, performs the largest migration made by an insect, since it is native to North America.
It is one of the largest and fastest dragonflies, as it can reach speeds of more than 80 kilometers per hour while flying.
This migration has been verified thanks to the fact that the proportion of the three forms of hydrogen in the atmosphere changes with latitude, with which it is possible to determine where a dragonfly comes from just by knowing how much of each type of hydrogen is in the wing of the insect.
