Field Notes

Description:

This is a male bunting. It is a medium sized bird that is colored green, red, blue, with hues of yellow. They have small thick beaks, and the male has a red ring around its' eye.

Habitat:

Can be found in the southern region of the U.S., Central America, and can migrate to southern Florida and the Caribbean. Habitat includes, open areas with some shrubs and trees, high grasses, and thickets.

Notes:

Nesting: 3-4 eggs with 1-3 broods per year
Diet: seeds and insects
Fun Facts: 1. Males that defend their territory can do so to the death.
2. As far back as the mid 1800's to today Painted buntings are trapped illegally and sold as cage birds. :(
3. The oldest known bunting is estimated to be 12 years of age.
