I agree with Travis. It is also the right season for the Fox Sparrow to be in Virginia. It is also one of the "bigger-boned" sparrows. http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/145/_/Fox_Sparrow.aspx
Might be a Fox Sparrow. The fat appearance is because it is fluffing up its feathers to keep warm.
