Field Notes

Description:

Oxyopidae; Oxyopes javanus Thorell, 1887. On May 16, 2023, I posted, on Project Noah, a spotting of a very small Lynx Spider (spotting number in Notes below). I believe this to be the same spider, based on the facts that this one is a full grown specimen (the 3 weeks since the original spotting gives about the right length of time for growing to full size) and this one was spotted on the same part of the same large plant. The reason for this spotting is that I did not manage to show the eye pattern in my first spotting (a very important identifier of Oxyopes spiders). Wiki describes the pattern as follows "six larger eyes arranged hexagonally on top of the head (prosoma), with the remaining smaller two eyes in front". I was lucky this time as the only photo I managed showed this important feature. The second picture is, obviously just an enlargement of the first.

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard on a Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus) locally called Bataw. Plant identification - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Bataw
