Field Notes

Description:

To 20 inches. Male: note white head crest and thin bill. These ducks are small and very attractive. They prefer wooded swamps. Female is dingy gray-brown. Nest in tree cavity. Contains 10 to 12 eggs, note the young ducks. They dive well. and easily rise into flight. Do not run along the water like the Red-breasted Merganser.

Wooded swamps.
