Description:
Juvenile eastern milk snake found crossing a trail in Shenandoah National Park, VA. These snakes have a tan or gray ground color and three to five rows of reddish-brown, black-edged blotches. There is a gray or tan Y- or V-shaped mark usually present at the rear of the head. The belly is whitish with squarish black blotches giving a checkerboard effect. It grows to lengths of 24-36 in. (61-90 cm).
Habitat:
Occur in woods, fields, marshes, farmlands, and suburbs. They normally stay out of sight, often hiding under boards and trash near buildings.
