Description:

Medium sized, gray/brown patterned moth with a fuzzy thorax.

Habitat:

Suburban. Attracted to an external flood light at night.

Hi Jon, thanks for the suggestion. I am fairly sure that this is actually one of the Darts from genus Acronicta. It does have some resemblance to the Catocalas so I can understand why you suggested it. :-)
This is called an underwing moth! you will not be able to identify the specific type without seeing the color under its wings as well as its underside
