Field Notes

Description:

This plant was red, had elliptical leaves arranged in a parallel pattern along it's long, reddish stem, and had a very smooth edge. It had some indication of fruit, and was around 10cm long and 2cm wide (At the red leaves). It was solitary. The green stubs in the picture, which were found at the top of the plant, were around the size of a fingernail.

Habitat:

It was located in partial shade in a secondary forest.

Notes:

There were ants running along this plant. It seems to have a symbiotic relationship with these ants. (Mutualism). The ants protect it from leaf-eating critters, and in return they get nectar.

Nice job on your description and notes. Did you check the shrubs and ornamental flowers of Singapore field guide? I think that it has a few species like this in it.
