Description:

Very soft leaves, autumn siting so no flowers.

Habitat:

Mountainside desert in mining ghost town of Silver City, UT.

Thank you! I've never heard of mullein; it was so soft, I just immediately thought Lamb's Ear and some pix seemed to support that.
Common Mullein has large, hairy leaves. Lamb's Ear leaves are smaller are more oval in shape. This is a first year plant. They bloom in their second year. http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=VETH https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stachys_byzantina
