Field Notes
Description:
The Bison have a great deal a variation between the American bison and the European Bison. The American Bison tend to be a tad heavier and shorter then the European bison. Because of the way the American Bison head is set they like to graze and browse less then the European Bison. There is also variation in the way the horns on their head are placed. Because of how the horns on the European Bison are positioned they like to fight interlocking horns, while the American Bisons favour charging.
The Bisons use sexual reproduction and only mate in breeding season, which is from July to September. Until then male bulls tend to follow around their female cow. They will even block their view form another male bulls. Then the most dominate bulls will male in the first 2-3 weeks in breeding season. The male Bison take no part in raising the calf. The ones born first are usual the strongest out of all the other calves.
Habitat:
The American Bison live around North America and Europe. They like grassy areas where they can graze for hours. They love to eat grass but because they are so large and strong they don't have many predators. Because wolves travel in packs they could probably kill one but they usually just go for the small calves. The American Bison integrate with the Prairie Dogs, the ticks, and eating the grass so more can grow back. They usually mind there own business and don't attack others.
Notes:
The American Bison might share this grassy environment with mice, squirrels, insect and even birds.
The American Bison hace a symbiotic relationship with the Black-Tailed Prairie dog. The Bison are attracted to the dogs by the large piles of dirt form the tunnels they dug up. The Bison then fertile the soil and eat all the tall grass so short nutritious grass can grow back for the Prairie dogs. The Prairie dogs also help the Bison by showing them where good tall grass is for them to graze, therefore this would be a mutualism symbiotic relationship since they both benefit.
The American Bison has a thick furry coat for the winter and then gets a lighter coat for the summer. The Bison also have strong necks so they can graze in there grassy habitat. This shows how this animal is designed to live in this environment.
