Field Notes

Description:

1inch soft body, beetle-like insect. Black with very dark green iridescent highlights. Pincher mouth. Top of abdomen has outline that looks like wings lying flat. But doesn't seem to have wings. Below that are ridges that wrap around. minor ridges are around the edges of the abdomen at a 45 degree angle.

Habitat:

Found in grass at edge of oak, pine woods.

Notes:

Seems to play dead.

Neat find! I moved this to the Arthropods section for you. This is a type of beetle. It looks like it could be a Blister Beetle from Genus Meloe. They are called Oil Beetles. Your beetle is a male, identified by the modified antennae. http://bugguide.net/node/view/303
