Description:

Lichen on boulder, Iao valley

Species ID Suggestions

tropical lichen

Parmeliella mariana

Comments (1)

The lichen identifcation was made by the bryologist, Dr. Cliff Smith (University of Hawaii at Manoa, Botany) who wrote (after viewing your photo): "It is one of the Parmeliella mariana group but it does not have apothecia which would definitely make it that species. It's sort of plump for that because I cannot see any obvious pegs on the margins of the inner lobes. The somewhat similar species off to the right side with the black hypothallus is Parmeliella nigrocincta."
