Hmm...not a grass skirt.... Thank you. I like links for this stuff because, while most of nature seems very ingenious to us, this seems strange. It seemed like the roots didn't go all the way down which makes your explanation make sense! Thank you for your help!
I am from Florida, and I have seen this many times. Just google Palm tree roots, or see this photo of how the water erodes away the sand from under the tree, exposing the roots: http://farm8.static.flickr.com/7173/6663042949_2974c92c15.jpg.
I don't think it is either. I believe it's fibers that break off of the tree trunk
Palm tree roots. It would help to have pictures of the leaves as well
