Field Notes

Description:

Orange body with a black head, wings, feet, and beak. Medium-length beak. Lighter and more washed-out colors than the male.

Habitat:

Plenty of birch and oak trees nearby. In the spring and fall the area is full of water over cranberry bushes. In the summer it is humid and swampy.

Notes:

I had the amazing opportunity to watch the female build her nest. It is amazing to watch them weave the materials into the orb nest. The male flew around and brought a few supplies as well or just hung out nearby.

For the longest time here after too many nests made out of fishing string and the nests falling out of trees they were gone from the area for years.

First year here in quite some time seeing them here for more than just a pitstop.
